A Congressional Visit to RACU’s Moscow Campus
The community of students, staff and faculty at the Russian-American Christian University experienced an extraordinary visit on Thursday, September 16, 2004, from three United States Congressmen—Curt Weldon from Pennsylvania, Mark Souder from Indiana, and Trent Franks from Arizona. The three congressmen came to Russia to extend the condolences of the U.S. Congress to the government and the people of Russia after the tragic events in Beslan. While on this important mission, they found an hour to stop by the campus of RACU to share their vision for cooperation between Russia and America and to encourage the students, staff and faculty to continue being serious about making a difference in Russia and the rest of the world. The three Congressmen, who had just arrived from a long flight from America, took turns speaking to the group and then answering questions. This was Congressman Weldon’s 38th trip to Russia, and his connection and involvement in Russia have been extensive. He discussed some of the ideas outlined in his position paper entitled “A New Time, A New Beginning,” and offered suggestions for ways that Russia and America could enhance and develop ties. He noted that the partnership between Russian and American scholars at RACU is an encouraging sign of cooperation between the two countries that needs to continue to grow. Congressman Mark Souder, a member of RACU’s Board of Advisors, described how he first became aware of the vision of RACU, and subsequently has supported RACU and watched with interest as it has grown. He encouraged the students in their pursuits, emphasizing that it is possible for even one person to make a difference if he or she is willing to serve others. Congressman Trent Franks also expressed his appreciation for the vision and hard work of RACU. He challenged the students, staff and faculty not to lose sight of the foundation on which RACU, as a faith-based university, is established, but to allow the love of God to work through them to influence those around. In response to a question from the audience, the congressmen highlighted the importance of a moral foundation for the ultimate success of any political system. Even if democracy and capitalism grow in Russia and take root, if they are not built upon a foundation of moral principles, they will not prosper. When the official meeting came to an end, everyone present gathered together to take a picture with the Congressmen. Afterward, there was time for the students to meet the Congressmen, who shared some hors d’ oeuvres and snacks before leaving for their next appointment. The visit was a wonderful opportunity for RACU students to meet firsthand with people who are taking an active part in influencing world events. Congressmen Weldon, Souder, and Franks gave the RACU community a valuable gift by giving of their time and energy to bring challenge and encouragement. It was a memorable evening for a young university.
